We’d heard so many glowing reviews about Sunway Big Box Hotel, and it’s been on our must-try list for a while. This trip, we finally got the chance to stay — and it definitely lived up to the hype.
The hotel is conveniently located within Sunway Big Box Retail Park, a 24-acre hybrid warehouse-style retail park. It means we didn’t need to drive anywhere to eat or entertain the kids — everything was right outside our door,

We booked connecting rooms again for the family, and right from the start, the experience was smooth. In fact, I found the check-in process here even better than at DoubleTree Hilton. There was no wait, the staff were efficient and welcoming, and there were free apples at the counter — a small touch, but one I really appreciated, especially since it gave the kids their daily fruit fix right away!
When we reached the rooms, we were genuinely surprised by how spacious they were. There was plenty of room for the kids to move around, and best of all — the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Amazing slides at Jungle Gym

The kids had been cooped up during the drive and were practically bouncing with energy — so this stop was perfect.
We paid for one hour of play at a promotional rate of RM28 per child, and it was worth every ringgit. The indoor playground is clean, well-maintained, and packed with enough tunnels, slides and climbing zones to keep little ones fully entertained.

The kids had an absolute blast! There was the usual ball-pit, trampolines and pretend play (princess costumes etc), but the standout of this indoor playground was definitely the various slides around.

This was a gentler, more placid slide — ideal for younger kids, but still surprisingly fun for the older ones, who kept going back for “just one more round.” It struck that perfect balance between safe and exciting, making it a crowd-pleaser for all ages.

This one was so beautiful! I had a lot of fun going down this one as a grown-up!

This one was soooo fun both kids went on several rounds. It was exhausting pulling the tubing up though.

This one was only for 7 and up, and the eldest one found it super thrilling and went at least like 10 times!!!
Cheap books at Book Xcess
Right opposite Jungle Gym was BookXcess, and of course we had to pop in. The store is bright and spacious, with tall, well-lit bookshelves and wide aisles that make browsing feel relaxed, not rushed. The children’s section is especially inviting — low shelves, colourful covers, and plenty of space for little readers to explore.
When we visited in June 2025, BookXcess was running its “Kaw Kaw Crazy Deals”, a storewide sale with books going for as little as RM1! We picked up a few great finds — including a quality picture book for just RM5 (!) which felt like such a steal. Definitely a highlight for any book-loving family.
Dinner at Restoran New Chua Kee (Gelang Patah)
We could have eaten within Sunway Big Box, as there were good restaurants around. But we wanted good zhi char. So we drove out to Restoran New Chua Kee in Gelang Patah, a popular seafood spot known for its generous portions and delicious food. Even on a weekday evening, the place was lively — a good sign!

We ordered a spread of classic zhi char dishes: crispy cereal prawns, Fuyong omelette, Nonya tofu, and signature salted egg crab. Everything came out piping hot and flavourful, with that unmistakable wok hei you can’t replicate at home. We loved the Nonya tofu — it was like hotplate tofu but with fragrant Assam sauce drizzled on top, and butter pork — crispy and yummy!
Prices were reasonable, service was quick and the entire meal felt like the perfect way to wind down after several days on the road. If you’re in the area or looking for a satisfying seafood dinner near Legoland or Sunway Big Box, New Chua Kee is definitely worth bookmarking.
Just as we were finishing up, an ice cream uncle pulled up outside the restaurant. The kids’ faces lit up immediately, and of course, we said yes. They each picked a flavour, and stood by the roadside, happily eating their ice cream in the warm night air.
It was such a simple moment, but it felt like the perfect way to end our final dinner of the trip — good food, happy kids and a sweet, unexpected treat to close out the night.
