Hong Kong: Mongkok!

February 2024

After an exciting morning at Hong Kong Disneyland, we decided to spend our final night in the vibrant district of Mong Kok. We hailed a taxi and headed straight to Eaton HK, our accommodation for the night.

Nestled in the heart of Kowloon, Eaton HK offers a blend of modern aesthetics and cultural experiences. The hotel’s location is quite convenient, just a short walk from Jordan MTR Station. Our Family Room was a highlight, featuring separate bedrooms—one with a standard bed and the other equipped with bunk beds that the kids absolutely adored.

Eaton Hotel is situated in a massive building, so it was easy to spot from outside. Besides accommodation, Eaton Hotel feels like a cultural complex. In the lower ground floor, there was the Eaton Food Hall, a foodcourt inspired by 1990s Wong Kar-wai films and the founder’s childhood memories. There is also a cinema auditorium, radio station, co-working space, music venue, cocktail bar, art gallery and curated local retail. Guests can enjoy live music performances, art exhibitions, and participate in wellness activities such as yoga and tai chi classes.

Next, we ventured out in search of a memorable dining experience and discovered Ladies Street Siik Fan Co. in Ladies Market. This restaurant offers a nostalgic nod to Hong Kong’s traditional dai pai dong culture, featuring décor adorned with vintage neon signs, iron gates, and even a golden dragon, creating an ambience reminiscent of the city’s vibrant past.

It wasn’t easy to find this restaurant, because it was tucked upstairs so it would be easy to miss as you navigate through Ladies Market. You actually have to locate a small lift within a building that’s tucked behind bazaar stalls that will bring you up.

We ordered only a few dishes, and the standout dish was *drum roll* the Prawn Toast (黑松露鮮蝦多士)! A crispy treat, this prawn toast is infused with black truffle, adding a luxurious twist to the traditional snack. You can see YB’s hand reaching out to steal bites! Four was not enough!

After dinner, we walked back to Eaton HK through the lively Ladies’ Market. The kids, though momentarily intrigued by the bustling stalls, were more excited to return to their room and enjoy the bunk beds. Goodnight!

Stars on Orchard Road brings readers into the magic of Christmas in Singapore, where Orchard Road glows with festive lights and sparkling stars. Through a young child’s eyes, the story captures simple holiday rituals — strolling under the lights, soaking in the excitement, and sharing the season with family.

When I first picked up this book, it brought back memories of my own childhood — strolling along Orchard Road during Christmas. Now, I do the same walk with my kids. This picture book is a warm, celebratory read that captures a uniquely Singaporean Christmas — one that has grown into a tradition of its own, and one that can now be passed down, page by page, to the next generation.
