A Seaside First: Our Staycation at Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa

December 2019

It was a weekend of firsts — our first time at Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa, and more importantly, J’s very first staycation. We weren’t sure how things would go (travelling with a baby is always a bit of a gamble), but the experience turned out to be such a sweet and memorable one.

When we checked in, we got a lovely surprise. We were generously upgraded to a Panorama Suite in the East Wing, which gave us not just extra space (a total game-changer when you’ve got baby gear spilling out of your luggage!) and a large balcony but also a breathtakingly beautiful view of the South China sea.

What stood out most was how baby-friendly the resort was — and honestly, that was one of the main reasons we chose Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa in the first place. We requested for a cot, a high chair, a bottle warmer and a steriliser (such a lifesaver!), and they were all set up in the room before we arrived.

They really thought through the needs of young families. It’s those little details that make a big difference. Being able to settle in without scrambling to make things work on our own gave us the rare gift of actually relaxing.

One of the most special moments of the trip was taking Baby J to the beach for the very first time. The resort’s private beachfront made it easy — no crowds, no stress. We dipped her toes into the water, expecting a quick in-and-out… but to our surprise, she loved it.

She sat in the shallows, happily soaking in the sea for a long time — splashing, squealing, completely mesmerised. Watching her experience the beach for the first time was one of those quiet parenting moments that just stays with you.

That night, we opted for in-room dining, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. No need to wrangle a restless toddler in a restaurant — we could eat in peace while Baby J roamed the suite or just hung out beside us. The food was surprisingly good, and it made the evening feel both restful and special.

The next morning, we made our way to the breakfast buffet, and it didn’t disappoint. There was an impressive variety — from local dishes to Western classics — and best of all, plenty of kid-friendly options like pancakes, fruit, porridge and mini pastries. High chairs were readily available, and the whole setup was fuss-free and accommodating.

After breakfast, we popped by the indoor playground, which was complimentary for guests, which gave Baby J a little space to crawl, explore and burn off some energy. It wasn’t huge, but it was a nice bonus — we needed a short activity before checkout.

All in all, it was a fuss-free, baby-friendly getaway that was really memorable!

Stars on Orchard Road brings readers into the magic of Christmas in Singapore, where Orchard Road glows with festive lights and sparkling stars. Through a young child’s eyes, the story captures simple holiday rituals — strolling under the lights, soaking in the excitement, and sharing the season with family.

When I first picked up this book, it brought back memories of my own childhood — strolling along Orchard Road during Christmas. Now, I do the same walk with my kids. This picture book is a warm, celebratory read that captures a uniquely Singaporean Christmas — one that has grown into a tradition of its own, and one that can now be passed down, page by page, to the next generation.
